False Start Baby Sleep

The birth of a child is not only a great event for new parents but also a great responsibility. You need to be prepared for this not only physically, but also mentally. Even if the children’s room is fully equipped, this does not mean that nothing else will have to be changed. That interferes, it is rearranged, it is generally removed – the permutations will be permanent. Something you will not like, something will scare the baby.

You will have to change not only things but also the daily routine. From now on, some things will be perceived in a completely different way. We are talking about normal sleep. Forget about the long eight-hour rest and get ready for constant watch over the cradle.

“Good Sleep = Proper Development.”

The sleep phases of children at this age are constantly confused – this is an axiom. Parents constantly wake up at night to comfort the child.

This inconsistency in the offspring’s regimen is called a false start baby sleep. There may be several reasons for this, but it is unlikely that they can be eliminated. This is a natural process that both you and your child need to go through.

What is False Start Baby Sleep?

This term refers to the phenomenon when an infant wakes up sometime after falling asleep. The time report is calculated as an interval of approximately 20-60 minutes. You do not understand what happened and try to sleep the baby again.

Scientists attribute such unexpected awakenings to the active development of the newborn and the accumulation of certain hormones. In particular, cortisol affects sleep cycles and related processes.

What Can Cause False Start Bedtime?

Such “whims” of a child are always unexpected and cause a lot of trouble for parents. The child may wake up in 20 minutes or may sleep for a little over an hour before disturbing you again. But there is no way out – you have to drop everything to lull the child again.

On the other hand, there are also positive aspects. According to scientists, such changes in sleep patterns indicate that the baby’s body is developing rapidly. The nervous system is being formed, the brain increases its activity under the constant influence of the environment.

1. Going to bed too early

This factor exists even if you always put your child to bed at the same time. And if the child looks tired, it does not mean that it is. Perhaps he slept more or less than usual during the daytime. In both cases, the phases of activity and inertia shift slightly, and by the evening there is still a reserve of strength.

Carefully look at the behavior of the child before laying in the crib. It may be worth rescheduling this procedure for 15-30 minutes later. Just hold baby in arms, talk to him, the main thing – no hyperactivity.

2. Excessive fatigue during the day

This is the reverse case to the above. The child was very active during the daytime, so fatigue accumulated. There is a need for a little rest, as a result – the baby inclines to sleep. After a little “recharging the batteries”, the body is again ready for activity. At the same time, he does not care much about the time of day outside the window. And there is no particular benefit from this, only chores for parents.

Overwork can be due to too much time during the day, which rarely happens. For example, too long a walk, going to the zoo, visiting numerous relatives – all these are new emotions for the baby. And often an unformed consciousness cannot quickly assimilate all this. Long naps cause false starts – this should also be remembered.

3. Third-party factors

An important factor in restful sleep is the surrounding space. The child’s body gets used to constancy, and violation of it leads to strongly felt discomfort. The temperature in the room, lighting, sounds – all this affects the healthy sleep of the baby.

For an adult, such factors are hardly noticeable due to their everyday life, but for a baby, all this may be new. He can be awakened by too loud conversations in the next room or music through the wall of the neighbors. The temperature in the room has decreased or it has become hot – the baby’s body will also react to this. If light from street lamps or passing cars outside the window breaks into the room, then the baby is unlikely to sleep soundly.

4. Violation of the going to bed “ritual”

It is not enough to set just a clear time deadline for going to bed. It is necessary to have an algorithm of actions that ends the “working” day for the child. The habit will take root on a subconscious level, so it will be much easier for you to lull your child.

You can take several tricks into service, some of them are classic. For example, a song – can be the same lullaby, or you can alternate several. If you don’t know how to sing, read a fairy tale. Attract baby’s attention and accustom it to the fact that after reading comes to sleep. You can end the day differently: bathing in a warm bath, feeding, a tour of the house.

5. Wrong diet

If the baby is several months old, then exclusively breast milk is fed. He receives all the necessary substances, but the problem may be in doses. Starvation or oversaturation may well be the reason for constant nighttime awakenings.

If the child is more than six months old, he needs to carefully develop a diet. Nutrition has to be balanced, find out if there are any allergic reactions to certain foods. It is desirable to carry out meals according to the schedule, the last of which is 1.5-2 hours before bedtime. This way you will minimize the fact that the process of digestion will interfere with good rest.

5 Ways to Prevent False Start Baby Sleep

Depending on age, a newborn needs a certain amount of sleep per day. There should be a clear division between day and night rest. There are sleep regression tables developed by specialists. They clearly describe how much a newborn should sleep at each stage of growing up. There are even calculations for children of five or six years of age.

1. Eliminate all annoying factors from the children’s room

These recommendations also apply to your room if you decide to place the baby’s crib close to you. The baby should not be disturbed by extraneous sounds, the light from the TV/computer, a cat roaming around the apartment. Darkness and silence should be provided to the maximum.

2. Stick to a sleep schedule

You need to end the day with the same action every time. Song or bath – the choice is yours, but the sequence must be followed. At the same time, do not forget to adapt to the baby and his routine. If due to sleep regression, he began to fall asleep later, then the procedures should be shifted in time.

3. Don’t stress your baby before bed

In this context, there is more given the emotional burden. Do not start too active games immediately before the rest. The child simply will not have time to rebuild if the fun is abruptly interrupted. Try to gradually reduce activity during the time scheduled for rest.

4. Comfortably equip the children’s bed

A foundation that is too firm will not contribute to calmness during sleep. It is advisable to take away all foreign objects from the crib, not only rattles but also soft toys. The kid can not only wake up but also lose his calmness for several hours after seeing the toys.

5. Reassure your baby before bed

Singing or reading to lull you to sleep is good, but other methods can be used in parallel. Gentle massage, kisses, or hugs will make the child feel safe.
