C-section Incision Pain One Side

Many women want to have a baby but are afraid of the birth process. It is difficult both physically and psychologically. Even if the pregnancy proceeds more or less calmly, childbirth can be difficult. Sometimes there are unforeseen situations when the intervention of doctors is necessary.

C-section is a very ancient procedure, one of the oldest operations that our ancestors mastered. This phrase scares many, but this procedure is aimed at the good. With its successful implementation, it is possible to save the life of both the woman in labor and the child. Modern medicine makes such operations less painful than it was before. However, it is unlikely to completely protect the woman in labor from pain.

“Pain Can Continue days and Weeks after C-section”

For some time the newly-made mother may feel C-section incision pain on one side. This is a completely normal recovery process, but sometimes the pain does not stop. In this article, we will tell you what is the norm after a C-section, and in which cases you should immediately consult a doctor.

What Causes incision pain after c section?

C-sections are often performed on an emergency basis when a woman was unable to complete the birth on her own. There are several reasons for this: the size of the fetus is too large, the beginning of uterine rupture, prolapse of the umbilical cord and fetal hypoxia. Sometimes women in labor lose consciousness or are very weak to continue childbirth.

But there are times when a woman in labor is prepared in advance for an operation. This happens if serious problems were identified during the diagnostics. Doctors insist on C-Section procedure if the chance of giving birth on their own is not very high due to health problems.

Indications for C-section:

  • Anatomically narrow pelvis (or fractures of the pelvic bones or spine)
  • Mechanical obstacles to the natural exit of the fetus
  • Anomalies associated with the placenta (Previa)
  • Diseases that developed during childbirth (eclampsia, preeclampsia)
  • HIV or genital herpes (need to avoid contact of the fetus with the genital tract)
  • Other diseases (heart, kidney, genital organs) that endanger the health

At first, C-section incision pain one side will hurt, there is no escape from this. The stitches heal very slowly, so they will disturb even with very slight physical exertion. Careless sudden movement (turning or tilting) will cause severe discomfort. But gradually the pain should decrease even without taking painkillers.

Pain can be caused not only by tension in the abdominal muscles but also by other, indirect factors. For example, the accumulation of gases in the intestines – bloating is very common in women after childbirth. Other muscle processes, such as uterine contractions, can also increase pain.

What are the chances of severe pain?

A C-section usually takes about an hour or more. Usually, doctors practice the use of local anesthesia, in rare cases – general anesthesia. Therefore, at least 2 hours, the woman who gave birth will come to her senses, and sometimes more time is required.

Typically, the mother is not immediately given the child in her arms, since this will be a strong physiological burden on her body. She will feel pain without it. Doctors should carefully monitor the condition of the baby and mother.

The level of pain at the site of the operation does not depend on the method of the incision. But the healing time of vertical and horizontal incisions differ. So, if the incision is made vertically, then painful colic lasts about 2 months. The transverse incision will heal in about 6 weeks, but the pulling spasms will annoy for about a year. You need to mentally prepare for this.

C-section incision pain one side after 24 hours

Any surgical intervention involves tissue damage. Accordingly, we should expect pain at the site of the incision or even around it. The type of thread with which the seam is applied also has an influence. So how long C-section incision pain one side lasts? Usually, the suture is removed after 5-7 days, during this week the skin has time to harden. But the pain from the hardened scar will be present for some time.

Often, sutures after C-section are applied with self-absorbable threads. Usually, the pain from such a suture is less but much longer. The threads of the cosmetic suture completely dissolve in 2-2.5 months.

Even if the operation itself was successful, negative consequences should not be ruled out. The most common is inflammation of the seam. It swells, noticeably changes color – it becomes noticeably redder, as an additional effect – the temperature rises. Sometimes there is mucous discharge from under the seam.

Another problem is associated with the divergence of the seams. Strong physical exertion leads to this, although it is unlikely that a woman in labor after a cesarean will load herself. But there is nothing terrible in this – with a prompt reaction, it is possible to avoid serious consequences.

Does Pain Continue for Days or Weeks?

So, we have already said that there will be severe pain only in the first hours after the withdrawal from anesthesia. Sometimes the symptoms can last for several days, but then gradually fade away and soon there will be only mild discomfort. Some women cannot get used to this, so they constantly consult with a doctor and thus have to reassure women.

Seams after a horizontal incision hurt longer. This is because more abdominal muscle fibers have been damaged. Accordingly, it takes much longer for the wound to heal. In addition to the “background” pain sensation, tingling will also occur with sudden movements.

To prevent divergence of the seams or their inflammatory process, you need to carefully follow some rules:

  • Do not to lift anything heavy (maximum – 3 kg).
  • Follow general rules of hygiene.
  • At least six months do not visit the sauna
  • No hot bath or hot tub

As the stitches heal, they will begin to itch – try not to do this. Make sure that your clothing does not rub against the incision site.

Logically, the most difficult is the first days after childbirth when almost everything hurts. Severe pain usually lasts no more than 5-7 days, then it becomes much easier.

Suggested Treatments for Incision Pain on One Side

Immediately after the withdrawal from anesthesia, the woman in labor almost does not feel severe pain, since the activity of the drug has not yet completely passed. But then the nerve endings begin to do their job again. In any case, the doctor ascribes to the patient painkillers according to the prescription. Additionally, a course of antibiotics may be prescribed.

Moms can take some steps on their own to speed up the healing process or relieve pain.

Wear a bandage

It fixes the muscles of the abdomen and genitals. It should be put on immediately in the morning and worn throughout the day. If you spend more time in bed, then there is no particular need for this accessory. On the other hand, you cannot spend all the time in a supine position – doctors recommend moderately active movement. Therefore, the bandage does not hurt.

Monitor the hygiene of the seam

Regularly wash the incision site (a clean wound heals faster), treat with special ointments to avoid infection.

Belly massage

With gentle movements, you can also do self-massage. The positive effect will be felt not only by the muscles of the abdominal cavity but also by some internal organs.

Proper Diet

Since the bowel acts on the suture site from the inside, causing pain, it is worth thinking about this problem. Try to balance your diet so as not to burden the intestines and kidneys with unnecessary work.

When to call a doctor?

Firstly, you will not be discharged from the hospital immediately after a C-section. Doctors need to observe your and baby’s condition. Depending on the circumstances, this can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks. After being discharged home, it is better not to stop communicating with doctors, even though you feel good. Periodic consultations will also help you psychologically.

Gradually you will get used to the discomfort, but the increasing pain should be a signal that something is wrong. Acute colic for no apparent reason is also a cause for concern. You can improve your well-being with medication, but first, get the advice of a doctor.

If there are problems with the stitches, it is also advisable to inform the physician about this. Severe itching, severe swelling, redness of the operation site are all symptoms that should not be ignored. And do not self-medicate – entrust your health to professionals.
