Why do Babies Cry When They are Born

The birth of a baby is a real miracle that a mother will remember for a lifetime. A woman hears a loud cry of a baby and forgets about the pain and discomfort during childbirth. The first cry of a baby causes special joy and cannot be compared with anything. It’s the real magic: the baby has purple skin after birth and suddenly the skin turns pink after the first cry. The baby begins to move and opens his eyes to see the world for the first time.

What is the importance of the first cry

Doctors are also waiting for the baby’s cry. It indicates that the lungs are already functioning. The child cries while exhaling.

The lungs are formed during pregnancy, but their functions begin to perform only after birth. They gently expand and contract during childbirth. A small amount of fluid remains in the airways, in the nostrils, and sometimes in the mouth. The cry of the baby helps to get rid of excess fluid and mucus and clear the way for breathing.

The first cry may be accompanied by gurgling. Pain-relieving hormones are produced that immediately enter the bloodstream. The level of carbon dioxide rises during a cry, which contributes to intensive breathing. The child gets better after crying. A sufficient amount of carbon dioxide in the blood eliminates the pain syndrome.

Why do babies cry when they are born

The reasons for this may be different. Birth is a stress and a change in the usual comfortable environment.

A different temperature, lighting, new sounds, and sensations – all-cause new emotions in the baby in the first minutes of life. We offer a list of the most common reasons why babies cry when they are born.

1. Birth stress

The baby has ideal conditions for growth and development in the mother’s tummy: constant temperature, supply of all necessary nutrients, and a sterile environment. Childbirth is a test for the baby. They are often compared to traveling to another planet: a different composition of the atmosphere, gravity, temperature, humidity, radiation.

Passing through the narrow birth canal causes pain and stress in the child. It is changed by temperature stress because in the delivery room the temperature is 10-15 degrees lower than that to which the baby is accustomed. The challenge is also to change the nutrient pathway.

Laying the baby on the mother’s chest and establishing breastfeeding help the baby quickly calm down and adapt to new conditions.

2. Pain due to trauma during childbirth

The baby receives significant physical stress during childbirth. The skeletal system of the baby is quite flexible. It can pass through the birth canal without damage. At the same time, there is a high risk of getting a birth injury to the cervical spine.

This happens if the baby is large, overdue, the normal course of childbirth is disrupted, or complications arise. More than 30% of children receive birth injuries during childbirth in the main presentation. This figure reaches 40% if childbirth occurs in the case of breech presentation.

The baby may cry a lot due to pain and discomfort caused by trauma during childbirth. A doctor’s examination and correct diagnosis will solve the problem.

3. Separation from mother after birth (C-section)

It is very important for a child to feel safe. The presence of his mother, her smell, and the beating of his heart has a calming effect on him. The child receives additional stress during a C-section because there is no way to prepare for birth during labor.

He is unable to be near his mother after the operation is completed and he is transferred to the children’s department. The absence of a mother nearby can cause anxiety and intense crying. Separation from the mother and a sharp change in the environment can affect the baby’s behavior, sleep, and manner of breastfeeding.

Co-sleeping, breastfeeding, wearing in a sling and frequent skin-to-skin contact will help babies born by C-section adjust more quickly.

4. Congenital disorders of the central nervous system

Incessant prolonged crying may indicate congenital neurological disorders. The baby cries a lot if the large fontanel begins to pulsate too intensely, swells and tenses. It must be examined by a neurologist. The cause of this condition may be an increase in intracranial pressure. It can be a symptom of serious diseases such as encephalopathy and hydrocephalus.

Violations of the nervous system in a baby can be caused by infectious diseases that the mother suffered during pregnancy and complications during childbirth. Proper diagnosis and timely treatment will help to successfully restore the nervous system and avoid serious complications.

5. Tummy cramps

The baby lived in the womb for nine months and received all the necessary nutrients through the placenta. Adaptation of the baby’s digestive system to a new diet can be the cause of increased flatulence. The accumulation of gases causes spasmodic pain and painful pressure on the intestinal wall. The child frowns, bends, blushes cries a lot due to severe discomfort.

A light massage of the abdomen will help get rid of cramps and pain. The baby should be laid out on the back and the stomach massaged clockwise. Movement should be light and calm. You can gently bend and straighten his legs. This will help to provoke the functions of the intestinal tract.

How to help a baby

The presence of the mother, the beating of her heart, the smell, and the voice remind the baby of the time when he was in his mother’s tummy. Simple actions can quickly calm the baby.

Skin-to-skin contact

The midwife lays the baby on the mother’s chest or stomach in the delivery room. This is called skin-to-skin contact. Dry the head and body of the child with a dry and warm towel, cover it, and put on a hat and socks.

Mother and child are covered with a blanket. This helps the child regulate temperature, reduce stress levels, and calm down.

The skin-to-skin method is good for the baby and the mother. A woman can relax and enjoy time with her long-awaited baby. This promotes the release of oxytocin and helps to improve the relationship between the child and mother.

Establishment of breastfeeding

Mother’s milk is not just food, but also protection from disease and a special emotional connection. Immediately after childbirth, colostrum is released. It is difficult for a child to get it, but thanks to this, lactation can be established and the sucking reflex can be strengthened.

Colostrum is rich in enzymes that protect the body. It helps to switch from intrauterine feeding, through the umbilical cord, to lactotrophic – suckling. The child should be applied to the breast immediately after birth, according to WHO recommendations, in the first hours after childbirth, during skin-to-skin contact.

The right application is the key to comfortable and effective feeding. The baby must be laid flat so that the head does not throwback. The tummy can be gently pressed against the mother’s stomach and the nose should look at the nipple.

Use of cocoon

It is very important for a baby to feel safe and comfortable like in a mother’s tummy. You can use a cocoon positioner. A small flat mattress has soft sides around the perimeter and an anatomical shape that repeats the curves of the baby’s body.

The position in which the baby is located resembles the intrauterine one: the back is slightly rounded, the shoulders are forward, the chin is pressed to the chest, and the legs are tucked in. The movements of the baby are not limited by anything: he can examine everything and wave his arms or legs.

Using a cocoon has several advantages. This is the fixation of the child in the correct position, the safe and peaceful sleep of the baby because the cocoon resembles the position in the mother’s tummy. You can use it from the first days of life and up to 5-6 months.

White noise

The baby has been hearing different sounds in the background for nine months. White noise can remind the child of this time and help to calm down quickly. The monotony and cyclical repetition of sounds have a positive effect on the child’s nervous system.

You can download applications with white noise on your smartphone. An ancient grandmother’s method will also help out: the child needs to be pumped rhythmically and hiss softly under the ear.

“White noise” is a universal method of calming down. It can be used immediately after birth. The volume of sounds during the period when the child begins to fall asleep should not exceed 50 dB. This level is considered the most comfortable and resembles the light sound of rain.

What is “purple crying” in babies

The baby is screaming and the methods of calming do not work. This is how you can describe the “purple crying” that occurs in children from two weeks to 3-4 months. A baby can cry up to 5 hours a day for no reason. Parents feel weakness, inability to change something, guilt, and even anger.

Attacks of “purple crying” often occur in the evening. Crying is specific: it is growing, prolonged, cannot be calmed down, and the child becomes red from crying.

“Purple Cry” is not dangerous, but it is still not worth ignoring. You need to try to calm the baby. It can be carried on the hands, in a sling, swaddling, tummy massage, changing the situation. You can use white noise, riding in a stroller or infant carrier.

How long can a baby cry

Crying is not harmful to the health of the child, but it is not worth talking about its benefits. You can wait a few minutes if the child is just whimpering and he can calm down on his own. The child is healthy but has been crying for more than 20 minutes – something is bothering the baby.

It is impossible not to respond to loud crying. It can harm the child – a broken voice or even an umbilical hernia. Prolonged loud crying leads to a deterioration in well-being, a decrease in the concentration of oxygen in the blood, and nervous exhaustion. Loud crying can worsen the condition if the baby suffers from neurological problems or has a tendency to form an umbilical hernia.

“Don’t pick up because the child will manipulate you” is a very common piece of advice. Newborn babies need to feel comfortable and safe, and in your arms, they quickly calm down. It is impossible to spoil a baby at this age. His brain is not yet capable of manipulation.

How does crying affect a newborn baby?

Strong crying for a long period can negatively affect the development of a child’s brain. Infants do not have enough mental maturity to regulate their bedtime. The child will cry and then fall asleep. This is due to fatigue and loss of hope for help and not because it’s time to sleep.

Prolonged loud crying can lead to increased production of the stress hormone. A large amount of which can damage the baby’s brain. This does not mean that parents should worry only the child has cried or he should not cry at all. Loud crying for a long time to which adults do not react is harmful.

It is better to contact a pediatrician if the baby is crying, or naughty, and the usual methods of calming do not work. Especially when the child also looks painful. Do not forget that the love, attention, and care of parents are the key to excellent health and proper physical and psychological development of the baby!
